A fun perseverance corner bookmark craft on the snail and the ark remembers the Spurgeon quote: “By perseverance, the snail reached the ark.”
Some character traits we teach our kids are incredibly important, not just for their future success, but for their ability to live a Christ-like life as they:
- raise a family
- pursue a career
- remain faithful to Jesus.
One of the character traits we want to teach our children is perseverance.
The Snail and the Ark
Charles Spurgeon, called the Prince of Preachers, once shared a funny illustration for perseverance I think your kids will enjoy. He said:
By perseverance, the snail reached the ark. ~ Charles Spurgeon, 1854-1892

Perseverance Definition Kids
Read Romans 5:1-5 as a family before you begin your craft. In the ESV, Romans 3-5 says:
Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
James 1:2-4, ESV, says:
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
To persevere is to steadfastly endure. We do what is right before God, loving God and loving others, even when it is hard.
Galatians 6:9, ESV says:
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
As you make your craft, discuss:
- Define perseverance in your own words.
- When did you do what was right before God even when it was hard?
- Charles Spurgeon’s quote about the snail and the ark is funny. Do you think that a snail trying to travel a long way would want to give up? Why was it important that the animals obeyed God’s command to get on the ark?
Talk about how important it is that we live for Jesus–even when it is hard.
