Can middle grade students (ages 8-12) understand the doctrine of the Bible?
Of course they can!
(From 2015:) I’ve been working on the doctrine of the Bible with my boys all year, using various adult resources. They notebooked their way through and we had some good discussions, but I certainly found myself wishing for more resources they could read themselves, without my assistance.
When I discovered that Catherine Mackenzie was writing a new middle grade book on the Bible, I was thrilled.
Evidence for the Bible
The Bible is God’s Word: The Evidence by Catherine Mackenzie (Christian Focus 4 Kids, 2014) is a great primer on the Bible and its inspired nature, literary genres, human writers, structural unity, and message.
Ms. Mackenzie answers concerns over seeming contradictions, discusses biblical authority, and points out the fulfillment of prophecies. She also discusses some of the archeological discoveries that have supported the biblical text and informed translation efforts. There’s a strong affirmation of the gospel and God’s sovereign care for his people through his Word and his plan for salvation throughout the book.
The Bible is God’s Word is written in the voice of “the Librarian” (see the picture above) directly to the reader. The text is entirely readable, with divisions and subdivisions of the material as well as little sidebars containing facts and evidence. Throughout the book, the Librarian addresses questions (ostensibly from kids) about the Bible.
The Bible is an important subject for kids—and The Bible is God’s Word is an approachable and engaging volume on that subject! I’m really excited about this book.
Purchase The Bible is God’s Word and Jesus Rose from the Dead
I’d like to thank Christian Focus Publications for sending me The Bible is God’s Word in return for my honest review.
Catherine Mackenzie has another volume in the same vein as this one called Jesus Rose from the Dead: The Evidence. These look like a great set!

Christian Biographies for Kids | Christian History for Kids | Theology for Kids
Christian History Matters for Our Kids.
History matters. Now, more than ever, we see how important it is for our children to know and understand history and the Bible.
Here’s why:
- God is the sovereign ruler of all things. It’s important for our kids to see his hand in the history of nations and in the lives of both peasants and kings.
- Christian history is the story of our family history. Our kids get to see how people who love Jesus follow him.
- Understanding history can help our kids learn historic and biblical theology. They learn what the Bible says and what that means for us. They also see when the study of Scripture has taken important turns that have changed the Church.
- Reading Christian biographies and history can be a wonderful way for kids to think outside their own time and culture. God’s Church spans centuries and includes people from every nation.
- Christian biographies help kids consider their own faith, walk with Jesus, and the impact their witness may one day have on others–and on history.

The thing that most appeals to me is the fact that it is meant for kids; it is on their level yet still teaching them truths. Thank you for this review and giveaway!

I have a book about bible contradictions that is written on an adult level. I would be nice to see one written for a younger audience.

Bible Study is one of our favorite parts of the day. I am looking forward to seeing what dimension this book will add in allowing us to dig deeper into God’s word at their level.

Thank you for sharing a page; I like the way that the author draws the youth into different types of writing and that she shares examples from the Bible.
