Often, historic Christians address different issues, in different ways, than Christians today do. There is value in hearing from the believers of the past.
In fact, I love to remember what Hebrews 12:1-2, ESV, says:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
That great cloud of witnesses we are surrounded by includes Christ-followers past and present. We are edified and encouraged by the Church–the Body of Christ. How great is that? And, one day we will meet the people who took the time to write for us, and whose stories we read about.
Charles Spurgeon
Charles Spurgeon, often called the Prince of Preachers, lived from 1834-1892 and preached as a Reformed Baptist in London for 38 years. A prolific writer and speaker, Spurgeon often preached to more than 10,000 people at a time.
Recently, as I was doing research for a book I’m working on, I learned that Spurgeon was a staunch abolitionist. In fact, he suffered death threats for teaching that chattel slavery is a sin. I’ve also seen commentary on the fact that Charles Spurgeon and Karl Marx were both spreading their (very different) messages in London at the same time. Charles Spurgeon is a fascinating historical figure!
Today, more than a century after his death, Spurgeon is well known for his daily devotionals. The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith is a year-long devotional focusing on the promises of God.
I want to thank Christian Focus Publications for sending me copies of God’s Promises Kept and More of God’s Promises Kept, and one of each to give away. This review is my own and is not sponsored.

Christian Biographies for Kids | Christian History for Kids | Theology for Kids
Christian History Matters for Our Kids.
History matters. Now, more than ever, we see how important it is for our children to know and understand history and the Bible.
Here’s why:
- God is the sovereign ruler of all things. It’s important for our kids to see his hand in the history of nations and in the lives of both peasants and kings.
- Christian history is the story of our family history. Our kids get to see how people who love Jesus follow him.
- Understanding history can help our kids learn historic and biblical theology. They learn what the Bible says and what that means for us. They also see when the study of Scripture has taken important turns that have changed the Church.
- Reading Christian biographies and history can be a wonderful way for kids to think outside their own time and culture. God’s Church spans centuries and includes people from every nation.
- Christian biographies help kids consider their own faith, walk with Jesus, and the impact their witness may one day have on others–and on history.

I read Spurgeon 20 years ago in college. He was fantastic! I learned so much, and it would be fantastic for our daughter, an avid reader, to read Spurgeon,…my only regret is my age when I discovered Spurgeon–33!
