Because I write and speak about the Bible for kids, parents often ask me how they can convince their teens to read Scripture on a daily basis.

While that’s a good question, it may be the wrong one.

After all, convincing our older kids to develop a healthy Bible reading habit may be skipping a few steps along the path to biblical literacy.

Biblical Literacy

Let’s talk about how we develop biblical literacy, look at an example from Scripture, and then discuss the evidence that Generation Bible is raising biblically literate kids.

To become literate is to gain competence or knowledge in a specific area.

That’s really what we want as Christian parents, right?

We want to have biblically literate kids–kids who are competent to understand Scripture and who know what the Bible says.

Literacy is developed through a series of steps. Think about how we teach our kids to read, for example. First, we read to our kids. Next, we read with our kids. We move on to supporting our kids in their reading before they become fully independent readers.

We often put the time and energy into helping our kids become literate, able to read, but we may try to skip ahead when it comes to biblical literacy. It’s easy to assume that once a child can read independently, they are ready to read the Bible alone. That may not be true.

We find a different example in the story of Philip and the Ethiopian treasurer in Acts 8:26-40. When Philip asks the treasurer if he understands the passage he is reading from Isaiah, this adult man–who is treasurer to the queen–replies: “How can I, unless someone guides me?” When Philip takes the time to explain the passage, the treasurer becomes literate–he understands the good news of Jesus and is saved.

We can do the same thing for our kids that Philip did for the Ethiopian treasurer.

Generation Bible

There is some really good news for our generation as parents–and the generation coming up behind us. In my book, Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible (Bethany House, 2021), and in the video above, I talk about the evidence that this up-and-coming generation of kids is turning to Jesus through his Word. They’re reading the Bible, and they know the Bible is important.

That is such encouraging news, isn’t it?

Your family can be a part of a movement to raise up biblically literate kids. You can be a part of Generation Bible.

Consider God’s words from Isaiah 55:10-11, ESV:

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
    and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
    giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
    it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
    and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

When we teach God’s Word to our kids, it always accomplishes God’s purposes. God’s Word never returns void.
