Celebrate your family’s journey through the Bible with a cute FREE Printable Bible Reading Chart for Kids!
Consider Moses’s third prophetic speech in Deuteronomy where he points the people forward in their relationship with God. In Deuteronomy chapters 12-26, Moses lays out the details of the covenant between God’s people and God–the rules and laws they are expected to follow. In chapter 27, Moses follows up with some very specific curses on people who commit very specific heinous behavior.
Deuteronomy 28 is all about God’s promises of blessings for the people if they obey him, followed by curses if they disobey the King of Heaven and Earth.
I love the example that God our Father gives us. He made his expectations very clear (first with the Ten Commandments and then with 15 chapters of laws when people didn’t keep those 10 commands). God emphasized what would happen in horrific cases. Then, he promised goodness and blessings for obedience. It was after those promises that God explained the consequences of disobedience.
The way God (who is not like us in many ways) communicates is not the point of Deuteronomy. His promise of future blessing for his children, though, was clear. The Lord encouraged obedience with a promised reward.
As parents I think it’s a really good thing when we communicate the plan and our clear expectations with our kids. It’s an excellent thing to bless and encourage our kids for complying with the plan!
Journey Through the Bible
So often as parents we think that to read through the Bible with our kids they must be fully on board and enthusiastic every day. That’s not necessary at all–though we can work to make the journey through the Bible fun and meaningful for our kids. What is necessary is that they comply and that we take them to God’s Word, the written bread of life.
But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the mouth of God.'” – Matthew 4:4, ESV
As we journey through the Bible with our kids, we are bringing them to the Word that comes from the mouth of God. That’s so important!
You may have questions about how to best explore God’s Word with your kids. My book Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible (Bethany House, 2021) is not only a crash course on how to study the Bible with your kids–it’s a journey.

Free Printable Bible Reading Chart for Kids
As you journey through the Bible with your kids, you can bless and reward them for their obedience and their accomplishment.
Your kids can keep track of their progress with this fun Through the Bible reading chart. Set up like to resemble a game board, each of your children can keep their own Bible reading chart. Once your family finishes reading a book, have your child color in the picture and write the date in the book’s frame.
You could even have a special prize or reward set aside to celebrate each book your family completes. It doesn’t have to be something big. My kids used to celebrate memorizing a Scripture passage with a piece of red licorice. Our licorice stash was reserved solely for Scripture memorization.
It’s important that take our kids through the Bible. It’s also important that we make it fun–that we bless and encourage our kids along the way.

Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible
You want your kids to learn and love the Bible.
You want to teach the Bible…
As parents, we deeply desire the best for our kids. We look for the right schools, we make them eat right and exercise, and we get them involved in extracurricular activities. We take our job as parents seriously.
But are we also putting our time and energy into
teaching them the Bible? Giving them the life-changing, soul-nourishing words of Scripture is not only doable, it’s an essential part of parenting kids for Jesus. And the good news is, studying God’s Word as a family doesn’t have to be difficult!
2 Timothy 2:15, ESV, says:
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,
a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
Our job, as parents who love Jesus, is to help our kids become approved workers, unashamed and rightly handling the word of truth.
The good news? Teaching the Bible isn’t hard. Your family can learn the Bible together.
…and you can!
