When I was in the fourth grade, I read Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. I am certain I would have remembered the story of a girl stranded on an island, fighting to survive.

Then again, maybe I wouldn’t have. It was, after all, a long time ago and I have read a lot of good books.

What I remember most about Island of the Blue Dolphins is the island my mom and I built after I read the book. I painted the water on my press board base blue, and carefully made each part of the island out of paper mache. We built a little grass hut where Karana lived, and we hung tiny, smelly little dried fish from the eaves. I still have no idea where mom got those fish, but I’m thinking they were some kind of cat snack.

It was the activity of building Karana’s island that really helped me remember the book I read so many years ago.

Bible Activities Kids Will Remember

As parents who love Jesus, we want our kids to remember the Book–the one that was written for them by the King of the Universe.

Our children are concrete thinkers. So, they understand what they can see, touch, and manipulate. They are built for story–but they benefit when we help make the story tangible for them. Bible activities for our kids aren’t just empty time-fillers. We can do fun (and often easy) Bible activities with our kids that will help them remember what they’ve learned for a lifetime.

When my kids were young, they loved to reenact Scripture stories with craft stick Bible puppets made from cardstock.
We created Egyptian death masks and talked about the traditions of the Egyptians and why their idolatry set them in opposition to the One True God they were called to worship.
My boys and I made a poster board representation of the days of Creation and hung it in our school area where we could talk about each day, and about how God created the whole world from nothing.
We measured the ark of Noah out in our street and marked its boundaries with sidewalk chalk.
The boys also measured and outlined a sperm whale in the street and imagined what it must have been like for Jonah to be swallowed by a sea monster. We talked about how unrepentant he must have been to sit in the stomach of the great fish for three days, being digested, before he repented and called out to God.

Some of these Bible activities took several days, and some were completed in just minutes. One thing is certain–my kids remember the Bible activities we did. Not only were they memorable, Bible activities helped my kids remember the stories we studies, they made Bible history tangible, and they created an atmosphere in which reading and studying the Bible together was exciting.

Not everything you do in your family Bible time needs to be hands-on–but your kids will appreciate it if you incorporate occasional Bible activities in your home.
