Bible Verse | Micah 6:8
As you prepare to make your Micah 6:8 bookmarks, go over the verse and help your kids understand it at a deeper level.
Context is so important when we read Scripture. So, first, read Micah 6:6-7. In the ESV it says:
“With what shall I come before the Lord,
and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
with calves a year old?
Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”
The prophet Micah has just spoken God’s words, asking the people of Israel why they don’t remember the good he has done for them. In Micah 6:6-7, the Israelites respond. Ask your children:
- The Israelites are asking God what he expects from them. How is their tone toward the King of the Universe? Is it respectful?
- Look at each sacrifice the Israelites propose God is asking for. Is each one reasonable? Or, do the sacrifices become increasingly unreasonable?
- Do you remember the Law in the Old Testament? Does God demand ten thousand rivers of oil for forgiveness of sin?
Next, read how God responds to the people in through the prophet Micah in Micah 6:8:
“He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?”Micah 6:8, ESV
Discuss God’s answer with your kids:
- Is God concerned with our outward sacrifice, or with our heart toward him and toward others?
- Love is a decision that leads to action. The Bible verse Micah 6:8 describes the way God wants us to love others.
- What does it mean to “do justice” (or “do justly” in the KJV)? How can you be just? What does that look like in your daily life?
- Next, God tells us to love kindness (mercy in the KJV). What do kindness and mercy look like in your daily life? How can you be kind to those around you?
- God wants us to walk with him every day. And, he wants us to be humble, regarding him as the King of the Universe–and the King of our lives. How can you invite God into your life each day? How can you walk with God–what does that look like?
You can talk to your kids about what the passage as you put together this bookmark craft. Be sure to share with them ways they can live out Micah 6:8 throughout their day–and share how you live out walking humbly with God in your daily life!
